Toshiba Satellite A355-S6925 16.0-Inch Laptop

If you want a well built, reliable laptop ... this is it. The standard configuration and set-up are good. The machine itself is quiet, with just a slight hum from the fan. I've been able to use the battery for over 3 hours reliably with multiple applications running. And, it doesn't get hot at all.

I'm not as tech-savvy as some commenters here. But, for general use in our household, my kids easily watch Netflix videos, are able to game online, load their MP3 players with music, and I can listen to Pandora and run MS Office products without any hangups.

The screen is bright and the colors pop. The speakers are more than adequate for built-in laptop speakers. I'd get another one without hesitation, especially knowing Toshiba products are reliable. This is our second, my wife uses hers constantly without issues throughout the day in her home-work needs.

Spec Check
  • 16-inch LCD screen
  • 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor
  • 320 GB hard drive
  • 4 GB RAM (maximum)
  • Dual-layer DVD±R drive with LabelFlash
  • Draft-N Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n)
  • Intel GMA X4500MHD graphics (up to 1750 MB shared)
  • Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
  • Fusion finish with Constellation Black pattern
  • Weighs 6.5 pounds

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC6400, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity of this notebook, and it also offers an ultra-fast 800 MHz speed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer Labelflash DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD±R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 6x for both DVD±R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

With the Labelflash functionality, you can burn high-resolution, high-contrast pictures on the label side of DVD discs using the same laser used for data recording. Enjoy transparency and high-quality not found in traditional printable media. All you need is a Labelflash DVD disc to start labeling without a printer.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio
The 16-inch WXGA LCD has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels--perfect for watching movies in their intended 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500MHD, which uses shared video memory (up to 1750 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

This notebook also features an integrated audio card and two Harman Kardon stereo speakers.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 5100AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments).

It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. It comes with the following external connectors:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (including 1 eSATA/USB combo port)
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • Video out: VGA
  • 1 ExpressCard 54/34 slot
  • 1 headphone jack (with SPDIF digital output for 5.1-channel surround sound)
  • 1 microphone jack
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
  • 10/100 Fast Ethernet networking
  • 56K modem (V.90)

Operating System
The 64-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium (with SP1) is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. Good Specs, Good Price, Feels Cheap
I bought this Toshiba laptop about 7 months ago. It has been very reliable, Vista hasn't crashed once, and I've never had any real problems. Internet signal is great, and it connects to the internet farther away from my router than my similar HP laptop. It's also fast enough to keep me satisfied, and can run videos and games with ease (as long as they aren't too graphic intensive, it is a laptop after all). The price has come down about 0 since I purchased this computer (probably because it has the dreaded Windows Vista) but even at close to 0, this laptop is a bargain. The screen is wide and bright and crisp, probably my favorite part of this computer. It has a built in webcam that is very clear, and Harmon/Kardon speakers that produce very very good sound. And thankfully, instead of those glitchy volume touch sensitive buttons (like the ones found on my HP, that rarely work and/or get stuck turning the volume up or down randomly when they aren't even touched), this Toshiba has a simple little volume knob on the front, next to the headphone jack. Very convenient. Another positive, it stays cool. Doesn't get as hot as many other laptops I've used for periods over 1 hour.

But, there are some things I really HATE about this computer. Firstly, the entire computer is a giant magnet for fingerprints. Every surface is shiny, and although it may look cool in the photos, it looks terrible when its covered with dust and fingerprints. Its also incredibly hard to clean without making it streaky or scratching the finish. Although I said the screen looks great, it doesn't make sense to have a 16-inch screen without a number pad. It actually appears smaller than the 15.6-inch screen of my HP, in part because it is really wide and not very tall. The entire laptop feels a little flimsy. It creaks and bends when picked up from a corner with one hand. Also, the little door on the CD drive became loose after about a month, therefore whenever the CD drive starts, the door vibrates, producing an incredibly loud and annoying buzz. I've talked to a friend, who also has a Toshiba laptop, and her CD drive does the same thing. To remedy the situation, I usually put my finger on the CD door when the computer is starting up, or when I hear the CD drive start. The keyboard feels flimsy, especially when compared to the keyboard on my HP laptop. Theres no real feel or feedback from the keys, and they feel loose, as if they are going to get stuck to your finger and pop right off. But the absolute WORST thing about this computer is the mousepad. It's scary bad. Its more inaccurate than any other mousepad I've ever used (at any pointer speed). The horizontal and vertical scroll bars arent marked on the actual mousepad (as they are on HP and Dell laptops) so you pretty much have to guess where they are when you want to scroll. I often can't find them, and instead of searching for them I just scroll the old fashioned way. At the top of the mousepad is a completely useless and annoying feature that will make your web browser go "Back" if you slide your finger from the right to the left over the top of the mousepad. It will then go "Forward" if you do the opposite. However, when I actually want to use this feature, it takes me about 5 tries. In that time, it would have been easier to just click on the back button. This feature seems to work perfectly when I don't want it to. Sometimes, I'll just try to move the mouse to the left or the right, and it decides to move my browser back and forward. Incredibly inconvenient. And I still haven't figured out how to turn this off. Occassionally, the mousepad will just turn off completely for a few seconds. I've found that rubbing my finger from the very top of the mousepad to the botton will turn it back on for some reason, but this is a pain when playing games.

My verdict: Good specs and speed for the price, but the quality is questionable.

Yet another Toshiba hit
Good Streaming, good graphics great. Works great with WIFI. The only problem is that the cursor jumps from time to time while I am typing. I would check the settings to see if this can be adjusted. All round good product.

I-Pen Digital Pen Writer Ipen Optical USB Mouse Input Device

Of all the devices that are out there, this is the one for me. It doesn't require any special tablet or surface, or even special installation depending on how you are using it. I do some web-based training in which it is helpful to do some whiteboarding to enhance my presentation. The I-pen works great and it is easier to control than a mouse.

The only minor issue I have with it is that you have to apply pressure to the point to simulate a left-click. This is cumbersome when trying to write. I would prefer a button on the barrel of the pen instead. As I say, this is a minor issue and does not detract from my recommendation of it.

Two modes can be changed manually with switch of the button. Especially, because it requires very small surface to write on, it is very ideal for laptop users and perfect for places where limited workspace is allowed.

Nice little monitor
Accustomed as I am to the "Square" screen of older monitors, I was at first put off by the "wide angle" view of this monitor. But it is very sharp, very clean, and I have grown to like it very much.

Consumer Reports Got It Right
I was looking for a new monitor, and I subscribe to Consumer Reports. They recommended this model for this size screen. They were right on. This is a very good buy for the money. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Great Monitor, both in form and function
We've only had the monitor for a few months, but the price was right, and Consumer Reports rated it one of their best buys. The monitor looks very nice, and is designed very well. The picture quality is quite good, and I wish we'd looked at Acer before.

The good:

-Tons of room for carrying extra stuff
-shoulder strap/handle combo gives good versatility
-better quality construction than I've found in other messenger bag style laptop cases
-stylish enough to not even look like a laptop bag

The bad:

-fold over flap is the only top closure and doesn't even cover the width of the notebook compartment, leaving electronics and other items in the bag little protection from the elements

Great bag
This is a great bag especially for the price. It is very comfortable. The bag hugs your body instead of bouncing against your leg. It fits a large laptop and has plenty of room.

Computer Bag
I like this for my lap top. Works well easy to carry and protects laptop. There is not much room for any other stuff.

Nice Bag for Good Price
Like the style, color and size.

Holds my 15 in HP perfectly. Also has enough space for a few books and battery.

I would definitely recommend it to someone.

Haven't used it long to know how durable it is however for the price i won't mind getting 3-4 years out of it.

HP NF869AA Mini Notebook Sleeve

This sleeve works perfect for my HP Mini (Netbook). It is well padded and provides just the level of protection I was looking for when I slip the Netbook in my carry on or in my larger carrying case. The sleeve only holds the Netbook, so if you are looking for something to carry cords and accessories as well this will not do that. It is also great for protecting it at home since it keeps the dust off and doesn't take up extra space. I like that the design matches the design on the HP Netbook. Very cool.

Netbook Sleeve
Very light and pads the netbook very well. Is also very attractive and pretty! :)

netbook sleeve
I bought a HP netbook for my daughter for her birthday and decided to add a sleeve for her to be able to carry it with her. It seemed to fit very nicely and protects it with good foam padding. It was delivered quickly and I was very happy with my purchase.

It fits the HP Mini 210 with extended, 6-cell battery, but has no carrying strap!
QUICK SUMMARY: It fits the HP Mini 210 with the oversized, 6-cell, extended battery, but there is no carrying strap that would make it easier to grab-and-go with your netbook in hand.

Along with my HP Mini 210 with the extended battery, I bought this protective notebook sleeve to keep this little netbook safe from the bumps and scratches of daily use. While I like the snuggness and padding when my Mini 210 is inside this "notebook sleeve," I was disappointed that it doesn't come with a taut strap to easily and safely transport your HP Mini netbook. Instead, you have to curl your fingers around the bottom edge of the netbook sleeve, rather than grasping a carrying strap. A close-fitted strap would make it easier to carry around your netbook, and it's harder to drop a netbook holding a strap than grasping the entire, padded netbook in your hand.

With a carrying strap, I cannot recommend this product to you.

Very sleek and a perfect fit!
Looks nice, good protection for a net book and it has some style to it!

Cooler Master 120mm Blue LED Case Fan - (R4-L2R-20AC-GP)

Recently the 360 in our entertainment center over heated. The door was open but the building heat in the area was enough to shut down the system with 2 red rings. I bought this and wired it to an old router power converter. That is plugged into my reciever and when you turn it on the fan comes up. The fan is screwed to the back of the entertainment center that I cut a hole in. This one fan is more than enough to cool the receiver, 360, wii, ps3, and cable box. Not that all of them are running at once but it works great. It even gives a blue glow from behind everything that looks better than I thought it would. This fan isn't as bright as most with clear holders surrounding the blades. Great fan over all. Runs very quiet and moves a ton of air.

I just finished assembling this unit, and I'm using it while writing this review. I have to say that this product exceeds my expectations. I went with the lower priced desk (around total) because this is the first product of its kind that I purchase. I am loving it already, the adjustable height is great, and the adjustable angle of the desk as well. Product came with everything needed for assembly which didn't take that long to do(it might be a little bit tedious dealing with some of the small screws, make sure you tighten them well but not over the limit - I guess this is common sense lol). Quality seems good so far (I hope it lasts long). The only thing that could be improved in my opinion is the length of the left (main) desk. I don't know if that would be possible though because it is already kinda heavy. Anyways I give this product 5 stars for the price, features and quality (mostly price because it was the cheapest within the alternatives).

Philips MMS171-PC 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System

This 2.1 speaker system isn't going to win any awards, but hey, it doesn't have to. It totally does the job, and at an awesome price. And don't misunderstand me---this isn't "good enough." It's WAY better than that. The subwoofer has a nice warm tone, and that was with the bass only turned up about a 1/3 of the way. The speakers are a little too light for my taste (giving the feeling like they are fragile), but the clarity of the mids and highs is quite nice. I could do without the separate volume knob. It's pretty dorky, and I can totally see it getting lost on my computer desk. But this system is definitely on the plus side of economical. Highly recommended, as long as you're not an audio freak!

Acer Aspire 4810 Timeline 14.0-Inch Laptop

Great great great notebook, really. This is a notebook for individuals who are looking for a good, affordable, sleek sophisticated looking design (if you ask me better than any other), speed, and QUIETNESS! and it doesn't get much warmth, you can sit it on your lap for hours and you won't get 4 degree scorch.

This is a perfect notebook, I carry mine anywhere (it's very light) and its battery life is very long, even when I use maximum performance + adobe Photoshop + Dreamweaver + Illustrator + internet + media player + Pdf + folders + itunes, and it works perfectly. Really I don't suffer from any performance problems.

I couldn't be more satisfied, just make sure you buy the one with Certino processor, not Pentium. It's a bit more expensive, but well worth it.

And I have no idea why all the bad reviews... i thought this would have like 5+ reviews I guess the Amazon quality of it is so so.

Customer Reviews

Mostly inaccurate reviews -- excellent laptop
I'm not usually one to post reviews, but I feel the need to since the majority of the existing reviews are completely inaccurate.

BOTTOM LINE: This is an excellent laptop. HOWEVER, you're going to need to format and install a fresh copy of Windows the moment that you unbox the product. When I turned it on for the first time, it was an absolute snail. I immediately formatted, threw on a fresh copy of Windows 7 x64, and proceeded to do a victory dance around the house. It's smoking fast and runs just about anything and everything I throw at it. From just daily use all the way through web development and a light game here and there -- this laptop won't disappoint you.

I was and still am pleasantly surprised. I'd never been inclined to buy an Acer in the past, but I sure am happy that I did this go around.

Love the build, but I've never felt not in control of a computer!
I've never purchased an acer computer before, only a scanner way back in the 90s. I've always been good with Windows computers and I fix all of my family's computer problems. This computer was the first time where I felt like I don't have control over one.

Literally, right on the 31th day of the amazon return period, my grandfather (who owns the computer) told me that the computer would automatically reboot about 10 seconds into loading the Windows desktop. I funked around with it for a while and determined that a RAM stick went faulty. From what I've heard, RAM is the least likely piece of hardware to break (and it's happened to me before on a Dell XPS. In that computer, two went bad at the same time!). So I ended up talking to outsourced technical support which is essentially only good for arranging shipments to a repair center.

They sent me back the computer and replaced the 2GB stick. It's been working fine for now as I've installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 and went through the device manager to install the appropriate drivers from the acer website. For now there are two issues that make me fear another breakdown. First off, I don't know what this is due to, but sometimes it seems that Windows doesn't see or recognize the CD drive, and if you were to put in a DVD when the drive isn't recognized, (and attempt a restart because the laptop won't play the DVD), Windows gets stuck in an endless shut down cycle. If you do manage to take out the DVD while its shutting down, the screen goes blank, but the computer doesn't restart and requires you to hold the power button. The second issue, which
is more ominous, is that one time after waking up the computer from standby, there was graphics corruption similar to this [...]

The video drivers are updated and when I had my memory issues I actually had graphics corruption similar to this. Since the graphics corruption is here after the memory replacement, I'm worried this computer will need to be sent back. Another thing you should know is that I can't do a BIOS update after installing Windows 7 because acer's update software is specific to Windows Vista. I spoke to technical support and they told me many customers have been complaining so they're working on something (supposedly).

Short summary of issues:
RAM failure
Faulty DVD drive
Graphics corruption
BIOS update restricted to Vista
No peace of mind...

On the other hand, when the computer works, I thoroughly enjoy working with it. It's got a nice keyboard and it's light and cool. The contrast ratio is meh, but you could get pretty good skin tones with intel's graphics utility. If you do get this PC, switch to windows 7 because though the core of it is the same as vista, the rough edges have been rounded and its a much better computing experience OS-wise.

Hope this review helped!

It's all good!...
Love it. After four months heavy usage - absolutely no complaints, thank God. The 8 hour battery is a marvel. Good job, Acer.
