Gateway LT2120u 10.1-Inch Netbook - White

Buying this Gateway was the result of owning an ASUS 1005PE for a week before sending it back to Amazon due to some quality issues and a general dissatisfaction with the ASUS Netbook design. I have pretty high standards when it comes to my electronics. The Netbook, even though essentially a cheap commodity computer, still needs to be well thought out and manufactured for me to buy it. I simply want the best value for my dollar.

After using the Gateway LT2118u Netbook for the past week, this is what I thought of it.

Chassis/Exterior:

This has to be one of the nicest looking Netbooks around, and I was immediately taken back by this Gateway while Netbook browsing at BestBuy. Even though I'm not a fan of Shiny outer lids because of the smudge factor, the thinly striped, candy red outer shell looks good, and does a decent job hiding finger prints & smudges. You'll still see 'em, but they aren't nearly as visible by comparison to the dark blue ASUS 1005PE I had.

When you open the lid, you'll unfortunately find a glossy black bezel surrounding the screen. This glossy bezel also happens to collect small bits of dust and lint rather quickly. If you can't tell already, I REALLY DON'T LIKE SHINY PARTS ON MY COMPUTER! Shiny plastics are only good for showing smudges & dust. Luckily, Gateway did a good job using a matte, gunmetal-grey colored palm rest & keyboard frame. Again, this sure beats the ASUS 1005PE's shiny, dark blue smudge-prone palm rest & frame. The brushed aluminium looking trim piece on the front of the Gateway palm rest which integrates the Track Pad buttons and indicator lights is a nice touch. I do however, have a problem accidentally clicking the Track Pad buttons at times with the lower part of my palms when they get too close to the Track Pad buttons.

The power button & wireless network lights look really nifty. They're located up at each outer edge of the screen hinges. The power button lights up with a blue wave, and the WIFI indicator lights up glowing red. This isn't a huge sell factor, but pretty cool nonetheless.

Looking under this Netbook, you'll find a typical looking black plastic shell with venting ports, hard drive/RAM access covers, and two small speaker ports facing towards you. The chassis feels sturdy and well built. In all, it's fairly clean looking, but the large capacity battery protrudes lower than the chassis. Don't worry though, it's not nearly as bad as the Toshiba NB205, or Sony's Netbook with the ugly, exposed battery hanging an inch off the computer. (A sorry by-product of small form-factor Netbooks needing a place for the battery to go.)

Battery Life:

I cannot complain about the battery life on this Gateway. It yields approximately 6 to 8 hours of standard use continuous operation. The ASUS 1005PE had better battery life by a few hours, but I can't imagine too many people who would need over eight hours of battery life in a single charge. Like I described in the chassis section, this battery does protrude from bottom case by about 3/8". On the topside of the Netbook, the battery sits up a little between the case and lid, but it looks well integrated with the design of the computer.

Keyboard:

In my opinion, Gateway nailed it on the keyboard design and layout. The keys are full sized at the cost of being a little scrunched together. I was glad to see normal sized "Shift" keys, a common keyboard problem with many other Netbooks. Another plus for me is that the keys are fairly quiet and solid feeling. No Clicky-Clacky noises when typing on this Netbook. After a week of use, typing became a breeze. Every once in a while, I still hit the wrong key, (I'm looking at you, Page up & down keys!) but the keyboard is generally hassle free and easy to use.

Screen:

The screen is a very typical 10" screen that you'll see in just about every other Netbook. I heard that LG supplies most screens for Netbooks. So, no matter what computer brand you buy, it's likely you're getting the same screen. The screen is nice and bright thanks to the LED back-lighting, but the vertical viewing angle is very limited. I guess with the slim profit margins for Netbooks, manufacturers need to make cost sacrifices where possible. The color and contrast is decent so long as you view the screen directly. Also typical of Netbook screens is the limited resolution. At 1024x600, this resolution beats the early days of 7-9" Netbook screens with their 800x480 resolutions, but it would still be nice to see more 10 inch Netbooks with a 1366x768 resolution. To save precious screen space, I prefer to auto-minimize the task bar on Windows to free up those extra pixels for applications that need it. Another thing to consider is using full screen mode if the application you're running supports it. When web browsing, it's almost essential to use full screen mode. Firefox does a really good job with full screen functionality.

Sound:

Sound quality of this Gateway isn't "that bad", but won't win any awards either. The speakers have the usual "tinny" sound most small laptop speakers have. They're loud enough to be heard clearly in a moderately quiet room, but in a noisy environment, you'd be lucky to make out what you're trying to listen to.

Track Pad:

One of my complaints about the ASUS 1005PE was the Braille-like bumps on the Track Pad. It seemed to reduce the overall accuracy of your finger tracking. This Gateway also has bumps, but unlike the ASUS, Gateway's Track Pad bumps are barely noticeable. You'll feel them, but they just feel like little painted on dots. As you slide your fingertip over the Track Pad, there is very little resistance in comparison to the seemingly GIANT bumps on the ASUS Netbook. Two finger scrolling, and side scroll actions don't always work exactly the way you would like. Sometimes you just have to click and hold down the side scroll button with the Track Pad button to get things done. Mainly, dialog and pop-up boxes have these scrolling issues. Other than scrolling, the Track Pad works pretty well. One more minor annoyance using this Track Pad is that due to it being flush with the palm rest, you can sometimes miss the Track Pad with your finger altogether (Especially the side scroll.) in a dark room, or when not looking at the Track Pad.

Operating System/Performance:

When a new Windows OS comes out, it tends to be more bloated than the last one. Vista was the pinnacle of a bloated, sluggish OS. Windows 7 changed all of that. Windows 7 feels much lighter on it's feet than Vista by a noticeable amount. Boot-up time feels quick. (Maybe 25-30 seconds.) Navigation in Windows 7 has also been greatly improved. The whole document structure has been totally reworked into libraries so you can actually find what you're looking for in a pinch. On the downside, this Netbook (As well as most other Netbooks) comes preinstalled with Windows 7 Starter edition which means customization and features is rather limited. You cannot even change the desktop background image. One of the really cool features of Windows 7 premium and above, "Aero Glass effects" is disabled by Starter edition, so you won't get to experience it unless you shell out to upgrade. When will Microsoft come to their senses and offer just ONE version of Windows? ~Sigh

Although Windows 7 runs good enough on 1GB of RAM, having 2GB makes a noticeable difference when running multiple applications. I bought the Crucial brand 2GB RAM module with this Netbook. The install was very simple. After removing the one screw from the RAM cover, you just push away the two tabs on each side holding the RAM in place. The module will just pop free, allowing it's removal. (See the customer images I posted for this Netbook to view the RAM removal for yourself.)

Video performance on this Netbook works OK in most instances. Flash video in standard quality plays smoothly. Higher quality Flash videos such as Hulu & YouTube HQ/HD can be choppy at times. If you use the Google Chrome browser, you can opt-in to YouTube's HTML5 video format which is less resource intensive, and can play hi-def videos more smoothly. If you watch videos using Microsoft's Silverlight (Such as Netflix online streaming.) video performance will also play smoother than Flash.

As with most Windows retail PC's, make sure to remove all the crap-ware Gateway preinstalls on your Netbook to help lean things out. Most importantly, remove Norton Antivirus, and install a decent antivirus. Microsoft's own Antivirus, "Microsoft Security Essentials" is free, and has been shown to work as good, if not better than most third party antivirus software. It also won't bog down your system while charging you money like Norton antivirus.

For a simpler Netbook experience, I also installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition to dual boot alongside Windows. For those not familiar with Ubuntu, and/or Linux, it's just another operating system similar to Windows. Google it sometime. Ubuntu's Netbook edition is a free, open source OS, and in my opinion, has a much easier to use interface for small screens like this Netbook. The menus, folders, and applications are all laid out in the open, making it easy to find what you need.

Another reason to use a Linux based OS is that viruses, Trojans, and other malware do not exist on Linux in the wild which gives me a greater peace of mind. Now, Linux isn't for everybody, and I don't expect most people who read this to immediately go out and install Linux on their computer. You can try it by running it off a USB stick if you're interested.

Other features:

I don't have too much to say about the other features of this Netbook. I was a little disappointed that Bluetooth wasn't a standard feature on the LT2118u. You'd think it would be since just about all other Netbooks in the 0 price range have Bluetooth. Oh well.

I don't really have much use for the webcam, but when I tried it out, I found that it works pretty well as long as you use it in a well lit room.

The LT2118u comes standard with three USB ports, a VGA port, multi-card reader slot, audio in/out jacks, a kensington lock port, and an Ethernet port with network send-receive LEDs on the sides.

I think that's about it for extra features.

Bottom line:

I think this Gateway is a real winner. It has a compelling set of features, looks great, and functions well. Compared to other Netbooks in this range, I think the LT2118u comes out ahead of the pack.

Love, love, love this computer
I do a lot of shopping on Amazon. I look at reviews and what is bestselling. I knew I wanted a netbook. I chose this Gateway because of the reviews it had received, both through Amazon and other sites. I absolutely love it! The screen is so crystal clear. The keyboard feels nice and big for a netbook. My husband has an Acer and we both agree, this is a better netbook. The styling is great. I only need it to surf the net, so I cannot comment on use of programs and such. I would be surprised if anyone was actually disappointed with this product.

Gateway 2119u
Touch pad very sensitive. Keyboard good size. I upgraded to 2G, but probably did not need to. Overall very satisfied.

Simply Awesome!
My household has five computers and this is the best one. I keep it in Sleep mode just by opening and closing the lid and the battery lasts up to two days with moderate use. This is our first Windows 7 computer and it works well, recognizing our home network and its NAS without any effort. I use a combination of Chrome, Picasa (with eye-fi), Security Essentials and Office and it is zippy enough.

An excellent netbook, good value
I looked at a Gateway because of one my wife has. She has a Gateway laptop that is now 5 years old (bought 2.20.05) and works perfect. For the past three years it has been on 6-8 hours EVERY night, as she streams internet radio while sleeping. It is used for basic email, internet, etc for perhaps 30 minutes a day. It still has the install of XP on it that it came with. The battery of course is about gone, but otherwise it is still perfect. Amazing!..

These have the new "pinetrail" Atom processor. Read some user reviews and decided on the Gateway LT2104u, went to Best Buy and picked it up. Nice packaging, nice small power supply and an overall attractive unit. Windows 7 Starter was very easy to set up, and connected to my WIFI without a problem. Had some bloatware, but this seems to be better than it used to be. I uninstalled the bloat, including MS Works, and all the Norton crap, and tweaked a few things. I also had a spare 2 gig memory stick that I was thrilled with because it fit! I put MS Office 2003, Photoshop CS3, Firefox and iTunes and some eReader software on it (plus a few other odds and ends).

Works great. MS Office and Firefox are perfect. Runs just as good as it does on my overpowered desktop. Photoshop runs fine, a little slower on some editing, but very usable and no problem. ITunes works perfect, 30 gigs of music, iPhone apps, syncs fine with my iPhone. Works great as an eReader (Adobe Digital Editions, Kindle for PC...etc) and the screen is great!.. Oh yes, the screen is wonderful. This little rascal will burn your retinas on the max brightness setting. Full and vibrant colors, with good text clarity. The keyboard is 93% normal size, and takes but a short time to get used to. I hate the touchpad's on laptops, but this one is better than most. The gesture feature is very usable, and once you get used to it works fine. Battery life is wonderful. Charged it the first time and got nearly 7 hours before hitting 10% (web, reading, Word with screen on ½ and power saving mode). I charge nearly everyday so I really don't run it down, and that says a lot. The laptop I had before would die at 2-2 1/2 hours so this is like a miracle. Another feature most would not think about is the fact the screen will go back almost flat. Most netbooks you find yourself holding and tilting to get a good screen angle. This one, the range of movement of the screen is such that you will not have that problem.

In the office I use it plugged into a 19" LCD monitor, external keyboard and wireless mouse. No problems with that set up, easy to connect/disconnect.

Downsides are really nitpicks. The lid is a fingerprint magnet. It is simply impossible to keep it even remotely clean looking. I really don't like the on/off button, probably a personal thing, but I just don't like it. It is a netbook, so forget gaming, except casual or retro (yes it runs Doom). All laptop speakers are a joke, but the ones on this are a complete comedy routine. Window's 7 starter is fine for me, but if you like to customize your desktop you will not like it. Since I gut any version of Windows I get, in order to get more speed, it works great for me.

Great little laptop, as long as you understand the limitations of a netbook and that fits your needs. For me it's just about perfect. Highly recommended.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10 10.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook with Integrated TV Tuner - Up to 6 Hours 20 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)

For the price I dont think you will find a better mini. Out of the box it found my wireless connection right away and upon opening the TV tuner I scanned for local channels and it found a few. The picture clarity is nice and watching television is an added bonus. It functions well and as far as speed, it has done fine. Not super fast, but gets around the internet and does what I need it to do. You cannot upgrade the memory however-YOU CAN INCREASE MEMORY BY USING A MEMORY CARD-I inserted a 4GB and it instantly came up with something called "cache boost" and I alloted the amount of memory from that card I wanted to let the computer us a ram, (leaving a bit of memory for picture and file storage). The 6 cell battery is nice as it is a bit thicker than the computer so when the computer is on a flat surface it creates air space to assist with cooling. I ordered a mouse to go with this as I hate using a touch pad, so I havnt any review for the touch pad. Battery has been used for approx six hours so far, about to need a charge. You CANNOT customize your desktop wallpaper-its disabled unless you upgrade. Not important to me, but be aware. This has been the best income tax refund present I have ever purchased. I paid 0. I would purchase again.

Dell 10.1" Netbook
Will use this little guy for traveling, which will be easier than taking a full size notebook. It works well, is fast and will do exactly what I want to do with it - keep in touch with family and friends

Dell mini beats HP hands down...
I initially ordered HP mini and was thoroughly disappointed with it. The arrow keys didn't work properly. I did a research and found that Dell Mini 10 has way better features for approximately the same price. I requested for a exchange and Amazon handled it very smoothly.
I am so delighted with my Dell mini. The look and feel is awesome and so are the features. I think this is the only laptop in this class which has a HDMI which connects easily to my LCD HDTV. I am yet to use the TV tuner but other reviewers have mentioned that it works nicely. The 6 cell battery pack is very handy considering that I would be travelling a lot with my mini. The keys are nicely laid and the touch pad works fine.

All in all, for someone looking for a small sized machines, Dell Mini 10 should be the best choice.

Dell Mini 10
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R37716YEML2NA7 I was relunctant to get the Dell Mini 10 because of some bad reviews I read. However, I am very happy with my choice of netbook. This is my 3rd netbook and it is as fast as the other ones. Its not a laptop. So a little slowness is to be expected.

I was worried about the touch pad, but have found no problem with it.

It does tend to get a little hot so a cooling pad would probably be a good purchase.

I pick up 26 digital channels at home and they show beautifully. I am totally impressed with the digital tv tuner.

I am also loving the HDMI. I believe this is the only netbook of this size that has a HDMI.

The 6 cell battery sticks out a bit under the computer. It helps raise it up so that it stays cooler.

It boots up fairly quickly.

I find no faults at all with this computer.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10.
Unit operated as expected although a bit slow. I would like to add more ram. Altough it works very well for my need of reading books. I think it is more full filling than a book reader.

HP Mini 210-1080NR 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 9.75 Hours of Battery Life

Filed Under (HewlettPackard) by admin on 11-03-2010

    Tagged Under : , , ,

QUICK SUMMARY: This HP netbook is n-network ready and has good style, functionality and features for its price-point. A somewhat troubled installation process and a few design complaints make it an almost 5-star product. Recommended!

Confused about all the different HP Mini 210 models? Check the bottom of my review for a comparison chart.

    WHAT I *LIKE* SO FAR:

    - It's small and lightweight, like any other netbook
    - The screen is LED backlit and very bright and colorful
    - The keyboard has good tactile feel, and isn't noisy while using it
    - I almost always touchtype the correct key on the keyboard (even the Backspace and Delete keys), even though the keyboard is smaller than my 15" laptop computer's keyboard
    - It's not sluggish using Office 2007 programs
    - You can upgrade the RAM yourself (without tools!)
    - Streaming of my in-home, High-Def home videos went perfectly smoothly
    - No vents on the bottom of the netbook, only on the sides, so the netbook doesn't gasp for air circulation while sitting on your lap
    - I could upgrade the RAM with a 2GB memory module
    - The upgrade to Windows Professional edition went without a hitch
    - The oversized battery tilts the keyboard a bit so it's easier to type on
    - Nice audio sound from the earphone jack

    WHAT I *DISLIKE* SO FAR:

    - The battery is huge! Check out Amazon's product pictures and you'll see it's oversized -- great for long battery life, but *awful* for aesthetic reasons. The bloated battery ruins the svelte form factor of this netbook. Worse, HP currently makes no provision to buy a second, smaller, 3-cell battery that would fit the natural contours of this device (I checked with HP about this, and they confirmed they have no stock of 3-cell batteries for the Mini 210). The upside? It gives the keyboard a pleasant tilt to type on.
    - The battery lock is spring-loaded on one side, but not on the other. The side that's not spring-loaded can be unlocked accidentally and easily, causing the whole battery to half fall-off the back of the netbook (this actually happened to me).
    - It uses a power-on switch you have to slide with your fingernail, rather than using a simple, power-on button
    - Some indicator lights, like the disk activity light, are placed on the side of the unit where you can't see them, rather than above the keyboard where you can see them
    - I'm not a fan of glossy screens -- too many fingerprints to clean!
    - HP replaces my [...] homepage with an HP version of [...], and that version doesn't render reliably when I fire up Internet Explorer
    - The edge of the netbook below the keyboard is uncomfortably sharp when you rest your hand on it while typing; I wish HP had used a smoother, tapered edge for hand-resting comfort.

    BACKGROUND:

This is my first netbook purchase, although I'm a very experienced computer user. I bought it to use at work to replace my paper notebook and to use Microsoft Office products common in the workplace. I sought for a very lightweight netbook with long battery life, good performance for its size, and a good feel to the keyboard. I looked online and in brick-and-mortar stores, and ordered this HP netbook from Amazon after first examining it in a local retailer who had it in stock (though with the battery removed, which is why I was surprised at how big this netbook's battery really is).

    INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION:

The out-of-box experience started off well. HP includes a big, can't-miss-it poster that you see immediately after opening the packing box. It concisely describes how to start configuring your new HP netbook. Basically, plug-in your netbook and turn it on, then go through the configuration steps -- like choosing your computer's name and your timezone -- to setup Windows 7 Startup edition.

When it comes to setting up the wireless network, I dispensed with HP's hand-holding setup program since I know how to setup wireless network connections on a computer. HOWEVER, I was baffled for a while trying to figure out how to turn-on the wireless card. I'm used to my Dell laptops, where there is a hardware switch somewhere on the side of the computer. With this HP netbook, there is no WiFi hardware switch. Instead, you have to use an HP software utility for enabling the wireless card. Then, you also have to press F12 to turn-on the now-enabled WiFi card. I'd prefer a slide switch to enable/disable the WiFi card. BTW, the WiFi is b/g/n-network compatible.

I encountered a problem with the battery receptacle on the netbook. When I first tried inserting the battery, it just didn't seem to fit very well. Mind you, I am *careful* with new electronics I buy, so I didn't want to force the battery without knowing what kind of force was really necessary. I did apply a fair amount of pressure to insert and lock-in the battery, but after the first reboot, the whole netbook appeared to have just died! All I saw was a black screen and a white cursor after I slid the power-on switch. I was nearly ready to pack the whole thing back to Amazon when I returned to the battery that was hard to install. I detached the battery and looked at the netbook's pin receptacle -- one of the pins was bent! I used a steak knife to unbend the pin and tried reinserting the battery once more -- it slid more easily this time, and the netbook subsequently powered-on normally. I'm convinced the pin was bent off the factory assembly line. So, if you buy this netbook, examine the battery pins at the back of the netbook to make sure they're straight!

Once you connect to the Internet, you have to do all the latest patching of Windows 7 (other programs will automatically try to get updated, too, like Java and Adobe Reader). I did the essential patching to Windows 7 only, because I needed to deal with the bloatware.

This HP netbook comes with some bloatware and assorted shortcuts that I immediately removed, including Norton Antivirus (*hate* it - use Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free, instead), a 60-day trial version of Microsoft Office Home & Student Edition, Adobe AIR, Times Reader, a bunch of Windows Live programs, and a bunch of HP programs. I uninstalled everything except the HP stuff, since I'm not certain what each HP program does at this point. HP is baked-in to Internet Explorer, too, in ways that make it hard to remove. There are a few other unknown programs I'm leaving for the time being. I've seen worse cases of bloatware on a new computer, so this actually wasn't too bad.

After uninstalling what I could, I installed Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise Edition, Microsoft Security Essentials, and my favorite utilities. The installation of Office went smoothly, including the subsequent Internet activation of the software.

Even after uninstalling a lot of crapware, I used MSCONFIG to find more than a half-dozen, non-Microsoft services that automatically start-up when booting this netbook (these aren't in the Startup folder, either). One of these services -- I suspect the HP service that enables the WiFi card -- interferes with my automatic backup to my Windows Home Server. I tried disabling all these services, but then the audio sounded *awful* without the "IDT Audio" service, so I re-enabled that service. What does this mean to you? Use MSCONFIG (Click the Start button, then type MSCONFIG) to disable these unnecessary, mostly HP services unless you really have a reason to use them.

All of this takes several hours to do.

    USABILITY:

I've only owned this HP netbook for two weeks, so I can't say I've had a lot of experience with it as yet. So far, I like using it well enough. It boots up to the login screen in 45-50 seconds (Note: after I upgraded the RAM to 2GB, it takes about 35-40 seconds to get to the login screen). It takes about another minute after you've logged in to start-up Windows Desktop and the start-up programs. Starting Microsoft Word 2007 takes 10 seconds. In my home, where I have all g-network devices (but an n-network router), this HP netbook will connect with a speed of no greater than 65Mbps -- slightly faster than a g-network device. If I was able to convert all my devices to n-network connections, I could turn-off mixed mode on the router and achieve much faster n-network connection speeds. Be aware of this if you have an n-network router with g-network devices attached to it -- you won't get the benefit of this netbook's n-network capability.

In general, the speed is good enough for regular computing needs. My general purpose computer is a 2.5Ghz, Core 2 Duo, 3.5GB RAM, 15" Dell XPS M1530 laptop. This netbook obviously is slower than my 15" laptop! Sometimes scrolling large Amazon product sheets takes a bit of time, and sometimes I have to wait a bit while this netbook chugs away at some compute-intensive tasks. In general, though, I find the speed to be suitable for my casual work.

Playing audio and video through Windows Media Player was a pleasure, thanks to WMP's audio Enhancements (which are hard to find, sadly).

    WINDOWS 7 STARTER EDITION:

Know what you're buying when you get this (or any other) netbook with Windows 7 Starter Edition. This edition of Windows has fewer features than even Home Basic, and much fewer than Home Premium or Professional editions of Windows 7. You *can*, however, use Microsoft's Anytime Upgrade to move from the Starter edition to a higher-level edition. It took me one day to decide to spend and extra 9 to upgrade from the Windows 7 Starter edition to Windows 7 Professional (upgrading to Home Premium costs ). With the Starter edition, there is no Windows Aero user interface, you can't choose themes or even Desktop wallpaper, you don't get Windows Media Center, no Sticky Notes, and you can't even move the Taskbar (I like my Taskbar on the vertical left rather than bottom horizontal). You can use Windows Briefcase -- which has been around since Windows 95 -- to synchronize data with other computers, but it's a pretty wretched, problem-filled technology (as I found out this morning while synchronizing with my home server). Windows Professional replaces Briefcase with rock-solid Offline Files & Folders (my favorite feature of the Pro edition) which is what corporate America uses to keep data portable and synchronized.

The battery life is advertised at 9.75 hours, but that would only be true if you are playing Solitaire on the dimmest screen setting possible, with no disk activity and Internet connection turned off. I use Battery Bar (freeware) to watch over battery power. It reports I get a little more than 6 hours of power from the battery (I'm using WiFi half the time, and the screen is lit at 50%).

    UPGRADABILITY:

You *can* add more RAM to this netbook. Do a Google search on "how to upgrade RAM hp mini 210" to see a great video on the details of that. I performed an upgrade to this Mini 210 netbook, swapping out the 1GB memory module for a 2GB module (Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory. For that matter, the process for upgrading would let you swap out other internals, too, like a different network card or different hard drive. Pulling off the back of the netbook is a little unnerving because you don't want to bend or break the back cover, but I was able to do so without a problem -- the cover just snaps on/off.

    CONCLUSION:

The one thing I dislike most about this HP netbook -- the huge battery -- is the one thing I'll appreciate at work, since I won't have to recharge the battery between or during meetings anymore. In fact, after two weeks, I've made friends with the oversized battery. I think the problem with being unable to get a second, smaller, 3-cell battery is a temporary issue related to the January 2010 release of the Mini 210 netbook line. It's the little design quirks -- placing indicator lights where you can't easily see them, battery lock switches that too easily unlock -- that make this an almost-perfect little netbook rather than a perfect netbook.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life

I bought an Asus 1005PE Netbook on my way to the airport for a business trip to Spain. I was truly disappointed with the speed of the device while surfing or checking email. I found that if I opened more then 2 Windows Internet Explorer pages the 1 gig of ram the box came with was spent. I was tempted to purchase a 2 GB stick but it cost the equivalent of 85 US dollars in Spain. A friend told me to download Mozilla Firefox for Internet browsing and it made the Netbook act like a brand-new machine that I could open multiple Internet pages and stream video without any problems. I have since replaced the 1GB memory with a 2Gb () but haven't noticed much difference due to the speed obtained with dumping MSExplorer. Bottom line, download Mozilla Firefox!
    Peace!

Toshiba Mini NB305-N410WH 10.1-Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life

Toshiba Mini NB305-N410WH 10.1-Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life

Interesting to read all the reviews here. The ratings go from a 5-stars down to 1- star. Makes one wonder, doesn't it? So, like all others, I did my homework and was on the fence between 4 or 5 netbooks (Acer Aspire One A150X, Asus EeePC 904HA, Dell mini 9, HP Mini 1000, Lenovo ideapad S10 , MSI Wind U100-016). Then, my son got a NB205 from his girlfriend for his birthday. I asked him to let me work with it for a little while and I was hooked. I touched, fondled, but not spindled or stapled about a dozen display netbooks all over town. For my needs and my taste, the NB305 is absolutely perfect. Mind you, I have a specific use for it - I work at different sites on different days and have to be able to pull out a computer quickly, enter data, generate billings and reports, do some quick research wirelessly on the Web, send and/or receive some quick email. Like that. It's a business tool for me. For simple communication, scheduling, IM-ing, texting, or looking up contacts I use a smartphone. For serious computing I have superfast desktop PCs with large monitors at both my home office and work office. So, when I went looking for a netbook, I knew exactly what I wanted and what I was going to with it. A netbook is not a PC, not a powerful laptop, and not a mainframe. It's a small tool that does what it needs to do and it does it well. People who complain about slow processing, inadequate graphics acceleration, poor sound, strange keyboard layout, limitations of the OS, etc. either did not do their homework as well as they thought they did, or are unreasonable in their expectations. But, if you do understand what a netbook is for, I don't think you can do much better than the Toshiba NB305-N410. At least not at this time and not for this price.

I am not going to describe all its features, since many of the reviewers have done that admirably. You should read the reviews at CNET, PCMag, LaptopMag, Consumer Reports, etc. Definitely go to a site where you can twirl the thing around in 360 so you can see it from all angles, see the ports, and appreciate the layout. Better yet, go to a store and handle it.

Some people complained about receiving units DOA. Others about esthetics. There is nothing in the World that pleases everyone. I don't know how many of these things are assembled everyday. In statistics, one in one hundred is considered zero. So, even with the strictest quality control there will be some potential lemons. Mine arrived in mint condition, fired up and worked like a charm within a few minutes and it has been functioning flawlessly for the last several months. I got rid of all the bloatware, boosted the RAM to 2 gigs for less than , installed the software I needed, got a folding full-size keyboard, a small wireless mouse, a light foldable elevator stand and, voila, I have a nice little ergonomic workstation on the move. I already had an external DVD-ROM drive for installing my own software. I can work a full day without worrying about needing to recharge the battery; I hook up automatically to any available WiFi network, do all the work I need to do, all in comfort, no fuss, no muss. I am eminently pleased with the NB305's performance, its utility, its esthetics (I dislike those shiny things that are magnets to finger prints, so I won't get an iPhone either), and its comfort. The keyboard is excellent, if I choose to use it, the screen is large enough for my trifocals, I don't get any glare, but then I don't set it up with the screen facing lights or a window.

The NB305 is a perfect little device that does exactly what it's supposed to do and does it better than most others in its class. Personally, I am delighted with my purchase and the more I use this little machine the more I like it.

Small in size but large in performance
You can't go wrong with this Toshiba. Setup is quick and painless. Rapidly locates wireless networks for internet use. Needs an external DVD drive but small size makes it more conveniently portable than standard size laps...

    PERFECT netbook!
I've had this netbook for about a week now, and I have fallen in love! Not only is it absolutely GORGEOUS (particularly in Frost White which makes it look so sleek and timeless), it is lightweight and a dream to use.

The overall build of this netbook has exceeded my expectations. Nothing about it feels cheap. The body is made of a heavy-duty plastic, and the top trim consists of a gorgeous chrome that definitely sets it apart from all other netbooks. The cover has a matte, textured finish (no greasy fingerprints!) that catches EVERYONE'S attention. In fact, the first time I took it to one of my lecture classes, I caught so many people looking back just to steal a second glance at its beauty. ;] The keyboard and touchpad themselves are the ones to beat. I have pretty long fingers, so finding a keyboard and touchpad that was close to standard was a necessity for me, and this netbook definitely delivered. There are, however, a few odd things about the keyboard. The tab key is quite small and the ~/` key is positioned to the left of the space bar as opposed to the top of the keyboard. Alas, these differences are minute, and I have adapted to them already (which is saying a lot since I've had it for no more than a week). The wi-fi on this thing is amazing! It connects quickly, STAYS connected, and delivers great browsing speed which allows me to actually STUDY at coffee shops rather than wasting time trying to constantly refresh and reconnect. :) In regards to battery life, let's just say this trumps my laptop EASILY. I've only had to charge it ONCE and I've used it every day (for web-browsing, typing documents, and streaming) for the past 5 days! Also, unlike its predecessor NB205, the NB305 does NOT have its 6-cell battery protruding from the back (which was one of the key factors that made me not want to buy that particular model). Instead, the extra weight from the battery was moved to the bottom of the netbook which, to me, is great because it allows me to get a better grip on it while carrying it around.

If I had to point out any cons, it would be the webcam and speakers. The speakers are NOT up to laptop/desktop standards, and the webcam is exactly as advertised - 0.3 megapixels. Considering this IS a netbook that is really meant for connectivity and mobility, these features really are not bad and are actually standard compared to other netbooks out there. In my opinion, the sound is decent, and if you really can't stand the softness, this can be easily fixed with a set of headphones or portable speakers. As for the webcam, it delivers suitable (not amazing) images and video that you could add special effects to such as frames for any special or random occasion. Remember, if you want portability, then there are of course going to be compromises. If you want crisp images and booming speakers, you'd probably be better off NOT looking at netbooks.

In short, I couldn't be more satisfied with this Toshiba mini. BEAUTIFUL, lightweight, durable, incomparable keyboard/touchpad, fast connectivity, amazing battery life, and [did I mention] BEAUTIFUL sets this netbook apart from all the others out there. Yes, it is on the higher-end of the netbook market but, in my opinion, it has every reason to be. And once you get it (notice I say "once" not "if"), you will feel as if each extra cent was well worth it as I do.

    Happy web-browsing!

a netbook is not a laptop
Small, portable, user friendly, nice finish and great looks. the keyboad takes some getting used to.
this cannot replace your laptop if u are doing anything more than email and wordprocessing.

Gateway LT2114u 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - Over 10 Hours of Battery Life

Note: This review is for what I believe is the newer model of this computer, the LT2104u.

This is a very solid netbook. I tried out many different models before deciding on this, and I am completely satisfied. Some reasons I chose this over others (since performance-wise, Netbooks are all pretty simlilar)

    -Keyboard.
This model has a very quality feeling keyboard. The tactile response feels just right; several other models felt 'cheap' to me. I use this computer mostly for writing, and I love it.

    -Trackpad.
I don't like trackpads, even nice ones, but they are just part of using a laptop unless you want to carry a mouse around. The trackpad on this model is larger then most, but not in the way when typing. It also supports various special movements and two finger gestures for scrolling and such, so as far as trackpads go, it is good.

    Size.
Again, most netbooks are about the same size. However, this model is a little thinner then most of the others, and the battery does not protrude out in an unsightly manner. The battery does add a small rounded ridge to the bottom, but barely increases the overall dimensions. This is among the best netbook battery configurations I have seen.

    -Functional Layout
This netbook has, in my opinion, well placed connections. There are USB ports on both the left and right sides (3 total), so you can use a mouse without having to have the cable running around the computer. There is also a multi-card reader and a VGA out, in addition to headphone out and mic in connections. There are no connectors on the front or back, only the sides.

Aesthetically, I also find this netbook very pleasing. I have the black version, though white and red are also offered. The top half is a gloss finish, so fingerprints will show up very easily, especially on the black model. The lower casing is made of a slightly textured highly qualitative feeling plastic, which I appreciated over the cheaper plastic used on some other brands.

Performance speaking, it has actually exceeded my expectations. As I said, I use it primarily for writing. The keyboard is 90% the size of a normal keyboard, and even though I have probably larger then average hands, I find it very comfortable to use even after several hours. The screen is also nicer then I had expected. The viewing angle I would say is on par if not better then most laptop screens, and the colors are very even all the way across from reasonable vantage angles.
I installed Photoshop 9 (CS2) on it just to see how it would work, and was very surprised. It runs quite well, I was able to open very large files with many layers and edit them without lag issues. I connected a wacom tablet and was able to digitally paint without any performance hiccups. Obviously, this is not an ideal setup, but it really does work and I would not feel out of place working on it for little sketches and such.
So, knowing that, unsurprisingly, less memory intensive programs work fine; word apps and internet and all the more basic things run great.
This computer has 1gb of RAM, and can be upgraded to 2gb. I am satisfied with the stock performance, but if you do upgrade, note that this is (so I hear) one of the few netbook models that is user friendly to swap the RAM in. There are small covers on the bottom held on with screws, so I imagine it is very easy to get to the RAM, unlike many laptops that require a more difficult procedure.

The model I have also comes with Windows 7 Starter. Many people complain about this "starter" edition, but it does everything I need just fine. The missing features are not an issue in my opinion. You will need to install programs from a source other then a disc though, as Win 7 Starter DOES NOT support external disc drives unless you pay to upgrade. So, either download software for it, or install off of a file. Again, I am using this computer above what it was really intended for, and don't find Win 7 Starter to be an issue at all. The reason they give you a basic version is to keep the price down, and I find that a more then fair trade.

    Random other notes-

I connected this netbook to a HD projector using the VGA out. A simple Windows key + P lets you set it up in seconds, and it works great. The resolution did not fill the screen (the projector was native 720p, so the netbook output was displayed slightly inset at 600x1024).

All in all, for the price, this is an amazing device. Despite being a 'weak' computer, it is more then functional. Simple computing tasks are no issue at all, and even Photoshop CS2 runs just fine. The screen is just high enough resolution that it is not bothersome at all to me, and the convenience is great. This is truly small and light enough that you can just toss it in a bag and take it anywhere, and no one will be able to tell you are carrying a laptop. The battery also really does last a very long time, at least 7 hours.

Highly recommended based on what I have experienced so far.

    Outstanding Computer
This is the first Netbook I purchased. We use the netbook several times a day. It has the the ability to do anything we need done. The battery life is tremendous. I reccommend this item.

    Great netbook!
This netbook is compact, light-weight and has everything I was looking for. The keyboard is easy to use. All-in-all a great buy!

    EMCOMM NETBOOK
I looked for a netbook for service as an Emergency Communications
computer to take into the field. I needed Win XP, long battery
life and small size and light in weight.

I chose the Gateway on its specs and I am not disappointed.
Amazingly, the keyboard size is almost the same as my
desktop keyboard; that made the transition easy.
I needed Win XP because the software I use was written
for XP and I don't need any surprises in the field
    with Win 7 or others.

Light weight, bright screen, fashion design
My wife and I have been looking for a light netbook with a fashion design for a while, and finally located this one. We got her about three days ago and started to love her. The overall design is eye-catching. We can easily fit her in my wife's bag. The battery can last at least 6-7 hours when we are doing word processing or browsing. If we are just reading a book, the battery icon says it can go more than 10 hours. Typing is comfortable, both with my large hands and my wife's small hands. The screen is bright with large viewing angle. The CPU speed is ok. Sometimes we had to wait a couple of seconds after starting the browser before being able to type the address. This is not a big deal to us. I have uninstalled most of the blowware, and installed office 2003 and a bunch of softwares that we normally use. 160 GB hard disk is enough. 1 GB memory is good for our use case, mainly word processing and browsing internet.

We have looked at almost all Acer/ASUS/HP/DELL/Toshiba/Sony/Samsang offerings. Sony vaio W was initially our first choice, but we didn't want to spend 0 more for a similar product. Samsang has a good design, but also expensive. We don't like the appearance of others.

Dell Inspiron iM10V-2734JGN Mini 10v 10.1-Inch Netbook (Jade Green)

Aside from having some buyer's regret because the price of this item has dropped about 0 since I bought it eight months ago, I have to concede that I like this netbook a lot. I have two full size pc's (a Mac Airbook and a Sony Vaio), but bought this because I needed something small and convenient to take with me on the road as I am not totally enchanted with my Iphone. For the most part, I use this to respond to emails, surf the net, store photos, and access files. It fits into my purse, weighs maybe 2 lbs, boots up quickly, and the 6v battery give me a lot of time (approx. 7-8 hours)on one charge. It even has a camera, but other than initially testing it out I don't use it. The keyboard is scaled down, but easy to use and easy to get used to. I can't comment on Dell phone support because any questions I've had have been answered via the online tutorial.
While this clearly doesn't do everything that a full feature laptop does(no built in cd/rom for starters), I need a pretty basic machine on my travels and am not fussy. I doubt if this would be adequate to support some business applications, but for the casual pc user who doesn't want to lug around a clumsy and/or heavy pc this is a pretty cool substitute.
I have accessorized this with a keyboard cover which does a great job keeping debris where it belongs, a netbook sleeve, and a chill pad.
The netbook is a good substitute for a pc when you don't require a workhorse.

    Love it!
Great little machine for traveling, surfing the internet on the couch and skyping.

    The good:
The quality of the keyboard is very good.
The screen quality is better than I expected.
Surprisingly zippy performance. Starting up, especially.

    The bad:
The trackpad is too small up and down.It is not very accurate and takes time to get used to.
The battery fits a bit loosely and rattles slightly.
The viewing angle of the screen could be better.

BE AWARE. THE BATTERY THAT COMES WITH THIS IS NOT PICTURED. The battery is double the capacity which is good, but does not sit flush with the bottom of the machine and effectively doubles the thickness of the computer. See the photo here: [...]

The negatives are just to let you know the shortcomings. For a netbook at this price, they are minor at worst. Definitely a great buy.

    Terrific little netbook
This small light netbook exceeds my expectations. I did not imagine it would have such a user friendly keyboard; I use it for word processing of short items such as this review. This product is so easy to lift, manipulate and carry. Battery life seems to be as advertised. I thought pink would be distracting; it isn't. This has quickly become my favorite computer. It's my first ASUS, and it has sold me on the company. As always, kudos to Amazon for sensible packaging and speed of delivery.

Asus Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU 10.1-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (Royal Blue)

Filed Under (Asus) by admin on 01-03-2010

    Asus 1005HA-PU1X

The Asus Eee PC Seashell design is very slick. I bought the 1005HA-PU1X based on its styling and features. The 1005HA-PU1X is one of the few netbooks to offer: Bluetooth, 2.0MP webcam, WiFi b/g/n, and easily upgradeable RAM in an affordable package with 10+ hours of battery life. However, there are some major drawbacks to buying an Asus.

The first thing I usually do with a new PC purchase is format the HD and do a clean install of an OS. In this instance, I installed Windows 7 32-bit Professional (full version) and do not regret this decision for many reasons. I also maxed out the RAM to 2GB, even though Windows 7 only uses about 500MB, up to 1GB when lots of apps are running. Windows 7 makes the netbook perform so much better than with XP or Vista. My Dell Mini 9 has XP and it boots slower and runs slower than the 1005HA with W7! The Mini 9 has a N270 processor with 2GB RAM while the 1005HA has a marginally faster N280 processor and 2GB RAM.

The BIOS upgrade procedure is very cumbersome unless you use the Windows-based Asus update. I did not figure this out until I dug around the internet to find a solution. AFUDOS is a horrible piece of software. None of the Asus BIOS update programs allow downgrading for BIOS flashes, so make sure you really want to upgrade.

The compact charger than came with the 1005HA gets extremely/excessively hot during recharging. It also makes an audible hum. There were some complaints about earlier chargers, but the problems have been supposedly fixed with the Delta-manufactured chargers. The blue LED is bright enough to be distracting at night. I couldn't sleep with it lit so I flipped it upside down. The charging system on the 1005HA is very funky. With all of my Dell laptops, you can yank the power cord between 95%-100% and be able to charge it again upon replugging. The 1005HA does NOT charge unless you drop it below 95%. It is not software/OS dependent - I verified this behavior using Windows XP, 7, and even Ubuntu 9.10! As long as you drop it below 95%, it will charge it up to 100%. However if you pull it before it drops below 95%, it will give you the dreaded "Plugged in, not charging" message. The battery will also self-discharge at 100%, so even if you keep it plugged in, it will allow it to slowly drop below 95%.

That said, I've gotten up to 14 hours of battery life with this netbook. I typically get 9-10 hours on one charge. It's awesome to bring this netbook into a classroom where there is a HUGE pile of AC adapters/extension cords/power strips running around the floor to power HP, Dell, and Mac laptops while I pull out the 1005HA without any power cords. I take Saturday classes so I can run my netbook for the full Saturday without ever charging it. Windows 7 has superior power management options over XP, so you can tweak a bunch of settings to conserve power. I use my Bluetooth mouse and WiFi connection in class, so it wasn't like I babied it. I hear the N450-based Atom processors can get up to 14 hours advertised, so considering I have gotten up to 14 hours with my N280, it's all good.

The LED backlit LCD screen is very dark. There are 15 brightness settings, but even at full brightness it wasn't nearly as bright as the LED backlit LCD screens on my Dell Mini 9, Dell Studio 1537, or Dell Inspiron 1545. The viewing angle on the 1005HA is also extremely narrow. You have to sit in front of it to see anything clearly. However, the image quality is very crisp for such a small screen and low resolution.

The built-in speakers are absolutely rubbish. It actually hurts my ears to listen to my favorite songs. The best way to describe the audio quality is to imagine hooking up a pair of headphones and turning up the volume. There's an excessively scratchy and tincan-like quality.

The SD/SDHC slot was extremely tight. It took off the label from my Kingston SDHC card and scratched the heck out of the blank plastic SDHC chip that comes with the 1005HA. The cards will NOT eject properly either. Upon closer examination, I found the internal shield/sleeve wasn't made properly. My Dell Mini 9, Studio, and Inspirons all have very free moving SDHC slots.

The keyboard feels very flimsy. The keyboard flexes when you type, and the Esc key was actually tilted on mine. It sat lower in one corner, suggesting another manufacturing defect. I decided to replace it under warranty, and to evaluate Asus's warranty process against Dell. I had to email tech support to get the phone number. I called and a very rude lady tried to get me to send my entire netbook back to replace the keyboard. I asked for just the keyboard and she emailed me a form that required my credit card ahead of time. I also had to pay return shipping out of pocket! With Dell, I can use the Live Chat and ask for a new keyboard which they will ship out next day for no charge. They will also give me a return label for no charge return shipping. Asus's customer service is pretty poor compared to Dell. The overall quality of the 1005HA isn't as good as Dell's Mini either. I only bought the 1005HA because I wasn't able to build a Mini 10 the way I wanted (BT w/ WiFi N w/ 2.0MP webcam).

The Ethernet port location is awkward. I've almost accidentally connected USB devices to that port, and it might have shorted out a few connections had I done so. It might because of how many laptops I have that have USB ports in that sport (right hand corner near monitor hinge).

The 1005HA comes with a charger and a small neoprene sleeve. The sleeve is a little tight to use, but works well as basic storage for the 1005HA. I recommend a more secure netbook case/bag though.

Pros: Inexpensive, lightweight, and compact. With Windows 7, it becomes a very powerful netbook that runs a lot of office apps very smoothly.

Cons: Asus quality is mediocre at best, customer service sucks compared to Dell. I'd rather have bought a Mini 10 but the 1005HA had all of the features I wanted.

    Overall: 4/5 stars.
