Well, I've owned three such devices in as many weeks, the last
which would make sense, is the Patriot Box Office.
Previous ones were;
Seagate, looks great but didn't have sound on my mp4 videos
Western Digital TV, looks great, sounded great, but had troubles with vid/audio sync
plus the WDTV doesn't play DVD menu's
But in comes the PBO, does all the above, AND you can install a hard drive
internal if you want, along with two USB connections, Ethernet connection, plus
can work wireless with an optional dongle.
really nice, highly recommend this, in fact, I purchased a second one just for travel,

Amazing performance and features..
I won't outline the many features as they can be quickly viewed at Patriot's website. This is a shockingly good device (for lack of a better word), especially given the price. It's a very new product category. While it plays nice with pc's and macs, it is a standalone device that does not require a computer to feed from. It even has a built in BitTorrent client that can be used independently of a computer. I don't know how much power it draws but it's probably very little (

HDMI problems
Ownership: 5 days
Pros: May work for you eventually.
The power consumption is low: 5W on (plus a few watts if you add internal/external hard drive), 1W sleep, 0.1W off.
The case is solid heavy aluminum with sharp edges around front and back, opens easily for access to fan and internal drive mounting. Would be easy to disconnect fan to make silent; would be easy to use insides without metal shell, no heat worries.
Cons: HDMI incompatible with Toshiba TVs and other brands.
HDMI 5-ft cable that comes with it is crummy. Monoprice replacement cable with ferrite cores works better, solves some compatibility problems.
Poor documentation.
Limited and quirky software features, not open to user improvements.
Other thoughts:
Do not buy this unless you are a geek and feel lucky. Maybe you will plug it in and have it working in under an hour. But maybe you will have an experience like mine -- days of struggle and regret...
After careful research bought from Newegg for , recd 3/3/10. 'Egg FreeShip was terrible this time, almost a week from TN to MA (usually fantastic - overnight from NJ). PBO does not work with Toshiba 26AV502U TV; the HDMI is not compatible, and you will be stuck in 480P with no sound. The composite output does work as a fallback, but quality is too poor to use this way on a regular basis. No component, S-video, VGA or DVI outputs.

and if you are still feeling brave or lucky go ahead and give it a try.
Plays: ts m4a flv jpg mkv mp3 avi bmp
Sometimes play: wmv rm rmvb
Does not play: mov
Comes in surprising large and heavy box. The main unit weighs 19 oz (11 for the shell alone), remote 3 oz, PS 4 oz.

Excelent
Excelent product..
Bought it to replace my Apple TV which DOES NOT play very well .MKV files.
Very satisfied !

Patroit Box Office
This box works great. Very good buy for the price, especially with the rebate. Picture looks great on my Samsung 52" LCD. The box surfs my home network with ease and I am able to pull movies and pictures off of my server with ease. One thing I did notice, and this may have to do with the fact my server is a bit old and only a single processor; movies will 'hiccup' if I am doing anything other than stereaming a movie. For the most part this has not been an issue.
I emailied Patroit technical support with a question about the box - they responed promptly and with the correct information.
I would recommend this box!
